Herpetofauna of fiji
Threats to Sea Turtles
Maintenance and conservation of habitats is especially critical to the endangered Sea Turtles of Fiji. Because they return to their place of birth to lay eggs, nearby beach development threatens these species when night lights attract hatchlings that should be heading in the direction of the shore. Having an extended maturation and gestation period, it is particularly hard to sea turtles to recover from population losses. Ecosystem Functions of Herpetofauna In Fiji other reptiles like iguanas, skinks and geckos play an important role in regulating the balance of their native ecosystems by both controlling the insects in the ares as well as pruning plant life. |
